LANSING, Mich.-- Approximately 40 members of the Michigan National Guard departed for Germany Friday to support Exercise Allied Spirit. Allied Spirit is a multinational exercise designed to prepare forces in Europe to operate together by exercising communication and operations within NATO Alliance members and partner nations.

The Soldiers from Michigan are from different units around the state and have been designated as Michigan National Guard Composite Headquarters. While in Germany the Soldiers will provide command, control and oversight of the active duty and NATO units participating in the exercise.

“Not only is this an opportunity for us to work alongside our active duty and international partners,” said Col. Clark Barrett, commanding officer for the Michigan National Guard contingent, “but also a chance to demonstrate the overall support the United States is providing to our NATO allies.”

The Soldiers are explected to return to Michigan in approximately three weeks.
