Michigan Army National Guard Soldier earns direct commission

LANSING, Mich. --

Sgt. 1st Class Rebeca Scripter, a member of the Michigan Army National Guard, became one of the first enlisted Soldiers to earn a direct commission in Michigan in nearly a decade. She received her new rank of 2nd Lt., in a ceremony held at the Michigan National Guard Joint Force Headquarters on Feb. 26, 2016.

The presiding officer for the ceremony was Maj. Kelly Marshall, labor and employee branch chief for the Michigan National Guard. Aiding her in the ceremony was the Education and Incentives Officer for the Michigan Army National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Tammy Ochoa.

“She has been working on putting her packet together for several years. She also gained and exercised outstanding leadership skills during that time which assisted in the direct commission approval process at NGB,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jessica Ulrey, chief of the Soldier Services Division for the Michigan Army National Guard.

Scripter entered military service in 2003 and graduated from advanced individual training as a Military Police Officer. Her exemplary performance and experience as a non-commissioned officer qualified her for a rare direct commission.

“I am extremely honored to be commissioned today,” said Scripter. “I had no idea it had been so long since the last Soldier earned a direct commission and I look forward to the opportunities that this new rank brings.”

Scripter will be assigned to the Wyoming-based, Delta Company 237th Brigade Support Battalion as a maintenance control officer.
