Fort Custer Environmental Wins Gold

LANSING, Mich. --
The Fort Custer Training Center environmental team: John
Mitchell, Michele Richards, Jonathan Edgerly, and James Langerveld took
first place in the 2015 National Guard Bureau Security Awards, Natural
Resources, Small Installation category. The project packet the team put
together will advance to represent the Army National Guard in the 2015
Secretary of the Army Environmental Awards and from there will have an
opportunity to compete for the Secretary of Defense Environmental Award. An

The winning packet included detailed information about FCTC Environmental’ s
program management repertoire that includes multiple natural resource
conservation programs and a thorough description of the FCTC’s technical
merits referencing specifically the Department of Defense Climate Change
Preparedness Pilot and the global network of conservation partnerships the
FCTC environmental team has formed along the way.
In addition to the 2015 NGB Environmental Security Award, the MIARNG
Environmental team overall, including the Lansing HQ and Camp Grayling and
Ft. Custer Environmental Offices won awards at the NGB level in 2014, 2013,
2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2005 and 1997. In 1997 and 2009 they were awarded
the NGB Environmental Stewardship Award for the ‘Best Overall Army National
Guard Environmental Program’ – making Michigan the only state to receive the
award twice. They’ve scored wins at the Department of the Army level in
2008 and 2005, and at the Department of Defense level in 2009 and 2008.
In a message sharing the news of the win, Lt. Col. Andrew Kuhns, a Michigan
Army National Guard Environmental Program Manager said, “Well done, and well
deserved, the efforts and dedication of the FCTC Environmental Team have not
gone unnoticed. Your team embodies genuine Pure Michigan spirit. Bravo team,
bravo.”
